IV. Theme Description

The significance of news, communication, and information in democratic societies cannot be overstated! Communication stands as a paramount emblem of expressive freedom in the modern societal framework, embodying the public's capacity to make well-informed political choices through the exchange of information. Also, media may oversee and facilitate governmental operations, public awareness, and the exchange of ideas, these efforts will indeed contribute to deepen strengthen democracy and its resilience.

 In the era of globalization, we are facing high-level risks with uncertainties and challenges. "Resilience" is the capabilities of social system to stand, endure, and recover from complex challenges and crises. "Democratic resilience" refers to the various strategies that must be adopted to prevent the decline of democratic systems and human rights into authoritarian setbacks. In the context of intense competition between democratic and authoritarian systems and rapid geopolitical changes, "Democratic resilience" is not only a crucial indicator of a nation's power but also a focal point of international attention and dedicated efforts.

 Since 2019, the time we were facing threats of novel coronavirus, resilience and determination have embedded in the core values of democratic societies. This extends beyond addressing health crises and protecting the lives of citizens, but to encompass how a society to stop foreign influences and manipulating its citizen, to safeguards voting, upholds national security and the values of freedom and democracy. Election is merely a part of democracy, there are much more values and beliefs that shall be cherished, and not for granted. Democracy requires societal consensus, identity construction, continual reflection, updated, and reinforcement.

 For democratic and like-minded nations, including Taiwan, are facing the same challenges. Media play a dual role in the current information and communication environment: it can be a power to enhance a nation's resistance, but can also be a tool to undermine democratic resilience. As part of society, how the media's functions and influence are manifested, and its impact on democratic societies, deserve further exploration by the academic community.

 The major theme of 2024 TCA conference aims to contribute to a more comprehensive and profound understanding of the importance of information and communication to democratic freedom. By exploring current communication ecosystem and analysis of the role, influence, and national resilience of media in society, the conference aims to enhance our awareness of the importance of information and communication. This, in turn, will contribute to strengthening resistance against authoritarianism and improving whole society.

VI. Submission

From 00:00 on February 1st, 2024, to 23:59:59 on March 14th, 2024(Taipei Standard Time; the time of the online submission system for the annual conference applies).

VII.Guidelines

1. Research papers, proposals for thematic panels or workshops, and basic information for the annual conference should be submitted through the conference's online submission system. (http://tcataiwan.org/conference/member.asp).

2. Essays and text description files should be uploaded in PDF format. A submission is incompleted until all files uploaded.

3. Author information should not appear in the file of a manuscript, and an author’s name should not be used in a file name.

4. Only research papers submitted full paper within the time limit may qualify for “paper of distinction” selection.

5. Authors should not submit manuscripts that have been published previously or simultaneous under reviewing process of other conferences or journals.

6.If there is any doubt about the identification of the social group and the student group, the sponsor may require the contributor to provide proof.

7.For non-Taiwan contributors, please select the Overseas Group.

8.This year's annual meeting accepts "First Author" to submit up to three papers, and the maximum number of single sub-topics is two papers.

 VIII.    Important Date

The complete list of selected works will be announced on the society’s website , and the contributors will receive email notification.
