This research is on Taiwan’s women contemporary visual arts, that is to say the traditional visual art such as carve, canvas, print, sketch and oil painting, the image visual art such as films, and the digital visual art such as animation, virtual interaction, installation art, intending to probe into the symbol representation, meaning and gender consciousness that reproduced through the art museum, film show, and artistic space.
With the rise of Taiwan women’s liberation consciousness in 1980s and 1990s, Taiwan’s women artists launched a succession of movements, criticizing gender discrimination and neglect of women in the artistic system, and expressed one’s own gender consciousness through the tactics of different artistic creations. The women artists intended to produce a flowing gender movement instead of traditional dual opposite gaze, overthrowing the way of seeing from male chauvinism. Besides, they created an experience of “I create, so I am” and a way of “the images of women”, expressing the emotion, experience and lust which belong to women. In addition, they extended the discussion range of the “sex” to pay close attention to topics such as society, politic, race, new immigrant ’s ethnicity, nature and community, etc., and then took a tactic of critical, deconstructive political practices, constructing a social identity of women’s subject consciousness. They, furthermore, took a positive attitude with women consciousness toward traditional history of ignoring women, attempting to write for women ’s life experience through the artistic creation.
