The role of media are more important in disaster management, especially following the development of communication technology, media have involved in every aspect of our everyday lives, and become an essential dimension of contemporary life experience. We cannot evade media presence and media representation. Therefore, it is necessary to study how media portray disaster and examine how to do disaster communication, due to we are living at risk society which may struck by earthquake, typhoon, fire, war and other accidents. When disaster happened, people are eager for useful information which is reported by media. Thus, media play a vital role of disaster management. But disaster is not an independent and objective reality. On the contrary, disaster is a social reality which shaped and constructed by media and society. People recognize disaster through media representation and simulation, different media discourses generated different meaning of disaster. This paper analyzes 3670 TV news from 4 major TV news stations (ETTV, CTITV,SETTV & TVBS) during the year of 2008 when typhoon attacked. The findings reveal that TV news tends to use “fear appeals” and “politic appeals” to represent typhoon image; the main information sources are reporters themselves. Moreover, TV news stations prefer to use simulation technology to demonstrate the threat and damage of typhoon; interviewing victims and criticizing government officers are the major content and always attract public attention to bring high rating. Although TV news stations provide variety information of typhoon , the nature of treating disaster as money making capital never change.
