Reporting Disaster News or Creating News Disasters? :Examining the Connections between Disaster Broadcasting and Disaster Management through the TV News Coverage of Typhoon Morakot
On August 8th, 2009, Typhoon Morakot had a catastrophic impact on Taiwan. As people in Taiwan paid great attention to this disaster, the role of media reporting became extremely important. This study employs TV news as the subject and adopts both quantitative and qualitative methods for research. This study used content analysis to analyze the major problems of disaster news coverage in TV reporting. This study also broadcasted the news and conducted focus groups and in-depth interviews. This research shows that although TV news has already paid attention to disaster management issues, it is significantly restrained by political ideologies. This study also shows that survivors are not necessarily against a sad and mournful TV reporting; however, television media should not compete for profit by focusing on disaster coverage news while ignoring the social responsibilities of broadcasting disasters.
