Environmental problems have become one of the central issues in the public spheres in many societies. In Ulrich Beck’s risk society thesis, the media is an important realm of sub-politics for environmental politics, for its coverage of environmental problems makes significant influence on people’s perception of environmental risks. This paper explores Beck’s theorization on the politicization of environmental risks, especially those of the environmental movement and the media, which are major players in the public sphere. The main argument of this paper is the public sphere of the media is not only political but also cultural, and the rational and cognitive perspective in Beck’s theory is not sufficient to account for the more grass-rooted protests by localized civic groups.
