英文摘要
This study examines empirically the effect of vertical market structure on outputs in the Singapore cinema distribution/exhibition market. The foreclosure versus pro-efficient conjecture about the vertical effect is tested through measuring the relationships of output quantities with the upstream and downstream market structures (i.e., distributor market power, exhibition competition, etc). The estimations at both the per- film-theater and market levels show that the exhibition outputs of films released by distributors who are integrated into exhibition respond to these structures, in their own right and relative to unintegrated counterparts, in patterns predicted by foreclosure incentives but contradicted by efficiency-based reasons.
