Media Ethics and Journalism Education: The recognition, attitudes and practices of journalism and communication-related students.
By choosing 1,666 university students who major in journalism and communication related fields in Taiwan as our research objects, this study explored the impact of ethical education on media ethical recognition, media performance, professional commitment, ethical attitudes and ethical practices. The results indicated that there was a conspicuous difference between journalism and non-journalism students on the aspect of their attitudes toward media ethical importance recognition, understanding, and ethical practices. Nevertheless, students’ attitudes about ethics and ethical practices did not depend on whether they have taken ethical education; instead, their own perspectives on ethics had a striking effect upon it. In a word, this study mainly discussed student’s recognition of media ethics and found out that students of communication departments were in general not satisfied with media ethics as well as their performance. Since ethical education played a less pivotal role in fostering better media ethics, the future plan of media ethical education would be better based on comprehensive cultivation of professional acts rather than individual courses.
