This study analyzes 448 student articles published in 11 Chinese-related communication journals from 2006 to 2011. It compares the publications by the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan graduate students in terms of quantity, subject area, research method, media type. Through the comparison of works by students and professors, we hope to find out the differences in the training system and path of development in these three places. Results show that Mainland journals publish more student papers, but the length and citation of these student papers are respectively shorter and fewer. Collaboration within region is more common than cross-region partnership. Mainland and Taiwan students are inclined to study localized topics, and regional differences in research interest are obvious.
