The purpose of this paper has been to provide a theoretic retrospective about the possible connection between narratology and mass communication research, and by doing so it is hoped that future learners may get a different cognitive map about what communication is.
The first section of this paper discusses meanings of “paradigm” and “paradigm shift,” and then how the “narrative paradigm” started since the 1980s is delineated in the second section. The main focus of the third section is on how the research tradition of mass communication experienced the “paradigm shift,” while the final section, other than explaining the meaning of this “paradigm shift” in the mass communication research, also briefly mentions the rise of “digital narrative.”
