The World Press Photo Contest, the most prestigious press photo competition
all over the world, established a new competitive genre in 2011 to award
excellent entries in the form of digital storytelling. Taking this competition as the
professional discourse of photojournalism, this study aims to explore what has
changed and what remains unchanged to photojournalism in the digital age. The
analysis showed that in comparison with traditional forms of photojournalism,
digital storytelling as defined in The World Press Photo Contest were neither its
subordinate nor extension. Both digital storytelling and traditional photojournalism
call for a visual approach to news narratives and the search for the truth, under the
guidance of professionalism.
