The move to a sensor-journalism presents a range of challenges for techniques, journalistic roles, and boundaries. When describing media innovation, researchers often adopted technological determinism and innovation diffusion theory in the past. However, in recent research, Actor-Network-Theory and Boundary-work emphasize the more complex relationship in the newsroom. This paper examines the introduction of the sensor in investigative reporting in Taiwan.
First, the newsrooms decided to use the sensor after deciding on the topic, and the use of the sensor was affected by various factors. Then, scientists are important actors in sensor journalism, responsible for "translating" the results, while the sensors also "displace" reporters and scientists across each other's boundaries. Finally, at the organizational level, the structure and culture of a newsroom are the keys to introducing technology, not the capabilities of journalists or programmers.
