Foreign ownership policy of broadcast media, as the implementation of the protectionism, impedes the development of media globalization. These protectionism strategies are imposed by most East Asia countries to protect domestic media industry from foreign competition, due to political, economic and cultural concerns. East Asian broadcasting systems are primarily national and government-controlled and broadcast media are utilized as the political apparatus and the instrument for development. With the global trend to relax the foreign ownership restrictions imposed on broadcast media, foreign ownership policies of broadcast media in East Asia would run into conflicts between political and cultural identity, and national development agenda.
