There has been more than 80 years from the beginning of Chinese journalism education. The traditional model of Chinese journalism education is practice-oriented and based on journalistic skills training. The apparent deficiency of this model is that there is no theory to teach. With the introduction and development of communication studies in China, the foundation of journalism and communication discipline makes Chinese journalism education become more academic. Noticeably, Chinese’s ministry of education brought communication studies in the field of journalism education in 1998. At the same time, some journalism schools, such as school of journalism and communication at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, created a new model: based on both journalism and communication, integrating Arts and social science and information science. As a result, three transformations of Chinese journalism education have been completed initially: 1) from single discipline to multi-discipline; 2) from skill training to both practical and theoretical training; and 3) from low cost education to high cost education. The purpose of this new model is to produce excellent practitioners with strong academic backgrounds and variable communicating skills.
