As an overall probe into the study of communication in Chinese mainland in the 1990s, this thesis shows a growing tendency to blaze a trail in the field of communication study. It sums up the five characteristics of communication study in Chinese mainland in the 1990s: an expanding scope; an unprecedented attention to realities; a tendency toward standardization; a growing exchange with overseas academics; an intensifying study. In addition, it predicts a new boom in the study in the foreseeing future. The communication study, the thesis points out, remains to be developed and intensified and attention must be paied to the understanding of the new trends in the world communication study and the improvement of quantity study.
