This paper examines how silence intersected with religion in the first Taiwanese presidential election of 1996. I investigate the rhetorical performance of the Chen-Wang ticket, which launched a religious-oriented campaign by investigating the three stages of their election. Ultimately, I argue that a radical campaign like that of the Chen-Wang, which utilized religion and silence as rhetorical strategies, did not meet the demands of the Taiwanese campaign culture in 1996.
