Under the context of cultural globalization, the configuration of cultural identity becomes complicated ever. Employing the theory of cultural hybridization, the researcher aims to deliberate the relationship between cultural symbol and cultural imagination. According to the relevant findings, the research suggests that the approach of cultural symbol will be an effective approach to study the formation of ethnic culture in the era of globalization.
The article explores the relationship between cultural identities and the performatives of second generation of Chinese American under the theoretical framework of cultural hybridization. The researcher presents an ethnographic study, based on the participant observation of Chinese American in Tallahassee Florida. The Chinese American community is constituted of Taiwan, China and Hong Kong immigrants. The author argues, the linguistic ability among the Chinese American Youths is employed as a strategy to approach their unique cultural identity. Despite unfamiliar with the Chinese culture, the second generation of Chinese immigrant considers the ceremony of experiencing New Year as an important cultural symbol to differentiate themselves from the American culture.
