Recently one of the most talk about phenomenon in Taiwan television entertainment environment is "He-sew-way girls" and "Lollipop boys." They are not talented but famous and get both good and bad criticism. Teenagers watch the shows but hesitate to admit. Hence, this paper aims to research these two shows through a cultural study approach. The authors intend to find out hidden social rules and culture values, which stimulate this unique phenomenon. This research serves as a part of popular culture study in Taiwan.
The authors conclude that girls and boys do perform differently based on gender expectations. Findings include boys are identified by their talent while girls use their talents as a mean to get love. Further, programs are hosted differently based on gender difference. These arguments provide us a special angle of watching these two popular teenager TV programs.
