Goodbye Chen Ding-nan: Compare the reports on his various political phases between United Daily and Freedom Daily

本研究主要目的，在分析《聯合報》與《自由時報》報導陳定南在不同政治階段的新聞是否有所差異，並針對「報導議題」、「個人形象」以及「報導偏向」作一比較。研究方法採內容分析法，針對三個時期進行探討，分別是陳定南擔任法務部長時期、競選宜蘭縣長時期，以及過世後的新聞報導。研究結果顯示：

1. 《聯合報》報導陳定南擔任法務部長與參選宜蘭縣長的新聞，在「報導議題」上會因其政治角色不同而關注不同議題，而在「個人形象」上，主要建構的形象以負面形象居多，至於「報導偏向」皆以負面或中性報導為主。

2. 《自由時報》報導陳定南擔任法務部長與參選宜蘭縣長的新聞，在「個人形象」與「報導偏向」方面，多是以正面報導，而「報導議題」多關注於「掃黑、查賄、治安」與「法律、政策」上。

3. 比較陳定南生前與過世後的報導，《自由時報》不論在「個人形象」或「報導偏向」上，仍以正面報導居多; 至於《聯合報》在陳定南生前多是建構負面的「個人形象」與「報導偏向」，而在陳定南逝世後，則轉向正面的報導。此外，在「報導議題」方面，兩報皆因其政治階段不同而有所差異。

The object of this research is analyzing the reports of United Daily and Freedom Daily on political figure Chen Ding-nan in his various political phases. The research method is content analysis. Three phases are chosen; his tenure as the Minister of Justice, the period when he ran for the head of Yilan county, and the period after he passed away. The research results are:

1. In phase 1 and 2, the United Daily paid attentions on various subjects as he switched phases, and formed most of his personal image in negative way, and wrote negative or neutral reports on him.

2. In phase 1 and 2, the Freedom Daily wrote mostly positive reports and formed his positive personal image, and paid attentions on subjects as cracking down on crimes, bribery, ordering public security, law and policy.

3. In phase 3, the Freedom Daily wrote mostly positive reports and formed his positive personal image as it did in phase 1 and 2. However, United Daily wrote mostly negative reports and formed negative personal image in phase 1 and 2, and turned to positive reports in phase 3. Besides, United Daily and Freedom Daily paid attentions on subjects according to various phases he was in.
