This study is to discuss whether popular music is regarded as a kind of social rebellion and apply narrative perspective in rhetoric field to analyze Yu-Sheng Chang ’s lyrics.The article chooses songs of Yu-Sheng Chang ’s albums, "Youth is like a Gun"、"Miss Me"、"Take Me to the Moon"、"Karaoke.LIVE.Taipei.I", in which have reasons of setting、character and plot.There are 13 songs. Besides, researcher also chooses two Yu-Sheng Chang’sarticles which explain his thought about creations.The research process is according to Foss: first, to check 8 narrative essences in texts.; second, find out and discuss the most important narrative essence; finally, to proceed narrative rationality according to the reserch question.
The results show that Yu-Sheng Chang ’s creations stress narrative theme and narrator. In the part of narrative theme, there are 3 topics: (1)noisy mundaneness vs. ideal Utopia (2)human advanced civilization vs. civilized crime and guilt (3)hope、self-confidence、aspiration and to surpass. And, in the portion of narrator, the research thinks that Yu-Sheng Chang is the active narrator and involved in. On narrative rationality, the narrative probability is divided into 2 parts: (1)the probability to reach social rebellion (2) the probability to create Utopia; the narrative fidelity is divided into 2 parts: (1) the values of Romanticism (2) to concern about a disadvantaged minority. In conclusion, Yu-Sheng Chang ’s popular music creations own the power of social rebellion through story-telling. However, his lyrics are difficult to understand to such extent that many people cannot be persuaded.
