Wikipedia has established its reputation as the largest encyclopedia ever, offering an ever-growing database of free knowledge for all Internet users. The issue at stake here is: what makes Wikipedia work? Unlike other known online communities that accumulate membership by offering loads of services, or those that profit from advertisements, Wikipedia not only offers its content for free, but also lets anyone edit and disseminate it freely.
The researcher probed into the making of Wikipedia with interviews of several key contributors for the Han language version of Wikipedia, and her own efforts editing and translating articles on the site. This research has found out that "community" still plays a vital role for Wikipedia; meanwhile, web services in the "Web 2.0" future should work at integrating more services, with aims to make things better for the majority.
