This study applies critical linguistics to analyze newspaper editorials during the 921 earthquake and concretely marks out the proof that indicates speech about government have transited from the fierce comment to passive encourage. We infer that the social structure as factors which provokes this transition and conclude the environmental mechanism to steer the media speech.
Our outcome of text analyses suggests the transition of media speech is featured as evolute and subtle. As a result, more than one power dominates this transition. We propose there are two powers struggling in the discourse. One is the government which remains patron and client with the media, and the other is the public who maintains the free market relationship with the media.
Because the media are not subjected to single power, it must be more discreetand furtive to pendulate its speech from one side to another. Such a inkling in textualchange shall be identified warily by critical discourse analysis.
