本研究以問卷方式抽樣調查了2531位在台灣地區就讀高中、高職和公私立初中的學生,希望瞭解接觸大眾傳媒和與家庭、同儕、與師長的互動,對他們的民主素養與政治態度傾向之養成,有什麼樣的影響。作者博採社會心理學和傳播學領域的學理,整合其重要學理概念如,社會學習、家庭溝通風格、和自我認同達成,建構一個因徑模式,來檢視會影響國內中學生政治態度養成的各類因素,以及其間相互的關連性。

從研究結果顯示:年齡較長者的民主素養較佳,威權情結比較輕,但是政治信任感低而且有較深刻的無力感。女性的政治知識雖然比男性略低,其威權情結也比較低。父母親教育程度愈高,子女的政治知識愈豐富,民主素養也較佳。經常收看電視新聞會增加中學生的政治知識,降低其威權主義情結,並提昇其民主素養。經常與父母和同儕討論政治與公共事務也有助於提昇中學生的民主素養,但是經常與老師討論政治相關議題卻有強化其威權主義情結的跡象。
英文摘要
A questionnaire survey of 2531 students of secondary schools on Taiwan was conducted with a view to investigating their acquisition of important political orientations. Theoretical concepts from social psychological theory and communication theory were adopted and integrated so as to construct a causal structural model in examining important issues in political socialization among these young people. According to the results from the study, frequent viewing of TV news programs has contributed positively in increasing their knowledge about political systems and public affairs, cultivating favorable attitudes toward democracy. Meanwhile, it also lowered their tolerance of an authoritarian style of political operations. Frequent communication between child-parent and between peers about political and public affairs also contributed positively to the development of a belief and favorable attitude toward a democratic political system. On the other hand, similar communications between the teachers in school and the youngsters showed a negative association with the formation of such democratic orientations.
