The study of popular music has emerged as a field since the 1940s. Following the continuous development of sociology and mass communication theory, the study of popular music has experienced the transformation of diverse theoretical perspectives. The first section of this article reviews the major findings of popular music research for the past 50 years concerning the relationship between popular music and sociocultural values. As a result, it finds that there are five theoretical perspectives, including the perspectives of control, reflection, representation, interaction, and simulation, explaining how popular music, as a system of meaning, may be related to social structure. The second section explores the political, economic, and social backgrounds in which the five perspectives emerged and discusses the differences between them. The final section concerns how the five perspectives can be applied to the development of the content of popular music in Taiwan.
