The purpose of the study is to analyze the content of 14 talk shows aired during the 1998 Taiwan Election. Who were invited to participate and what were the issues they discussed? Were there any relationships between participation in talk show and be elected?
The results showed that about seventy percent of the issues discussed at talk shows were related to mayor election. While legislative election was also held last year, less attention of the talk show has paid to it which coincided with the criticism of the lack of diversity of the talk show.
About fifty percent of the talk show guests were candidates, and another fifteen percent of the guests were candidates/party representatives. Less than eight percent Of the guests were scholars. The results showed that among 1866 guests participated In the talk show during the election period, 608 run for the legislative position, and 396 got elected. And 362 guests run for seats in the city council, the electorate rate was 82.64%.
