Realizing the playing of sex-role is the important stage of a child ’s socialization, because the socialization is the course of learning what roles are. Besides, childhood is exactly the period when people start learning social roles step by step. TV program is the main source for children to obtain the knowledge about sex-role; even without the personal experience, children could also understand and learn the norm of man and woman ’s behavior. However, many people and scholars have such a question: "Does the norms showed on TV program really reflect the truth in our society?"
Reviewing the related literature, we can find that TV programs, including adult-program, children-program, and soap opera , could not reflect correctly the relationship and roles between man and woman, and the way of describing still keeps the main ideology which focuses on the stereotype about men and women, that is, a man is higher than a woman. What stereotypes showed on TV will affect children ’s socialization, and cause children to misunderstand the real situation in our society.
The sex-role stereotyping on TV program indeed has an influence on children. And when children watch TV programs, how do they interact with information showed on TV? In other words, how do children interpret what they watched? To explore this phenomenon deeply, this research decides to analyze the soap opera, named "With you tomorrow", and chose 10 primary school students to be interviewed to find out the interpretation of children.
Moreover, this research concentrates on the active symbol of audience, stressing both of audience and text are important. Audience can interpret actively what they watched. Therefore, when children watch TV programs, they have the active power to interpret the sex-role stereotyping.
According to the result, we found that the children ’s interpreting could be divided into three patterns: normal, situational, and structural. .Also, the factors causing children to have different interpreting patterns may be : sex, the teaching of parents, viewing time, parents ’ education, and family, and the latter two are social factors which affect children ’s interpreting.
