If a society ’s media representation cannot reflect its culture,serious cultural identity crisis may arise. Based on a case study of Ontario ’s media education in Canada, this paper examines how foreign media representation led to cultural identity problem.Facing cultural challenge, Ontarians promoted Media Literacy Movement during the 1970s to 1980s. As a result , the Ontario government agreed to include media education as part of the formal school curiculum in order to help students analyze media representation and cultivate their Canadian consciousness. This study points out that the advancement of communication technology could intensify the conflict between foreign media representation and local cultural identity. The Canadian ’s approach and strategy to handle the conflict are also discussed in this paper.
