The study aims at exploring the narrative elements of news report. Cultural study has begun in recent years to explain the quality of news and through which to seek the cultural meaning of our immediate society. Take news as narrative, however, is a different research approach. This current study proposes to analyze news from two narrative aspects: story and discourse.
Narratives come from our daily experiences as social reality appearing in news. The basic and common elements that sustain both factual and fictional writings are the core concerns in this study, which defines a theory of news narrative and at the same time identifies some necessary inner structures of daily news.
A content analysis is applied to examine the relationship between narrative theory and daily news. The research concludes that some important structural elements in news narrative are setting, episode, summary, comment and quality. The research hopes to provide valuable insights in future communication research and news writing.
