This study is to improve productivity in collaborative knowledge work settings. It focuses on analyzing information processes, including the information needs; the information barriers; and the way information is stored, structured, retrieved, and updated during the course of product development. As an example application, this research investigated software development working environment. The research interviewed 16 software engineers and managers who had been involved in large-scale software product development at 9 software companies in the United States. The results conclude six essential information processes that contribute to productivity. These are: (1) A shared goal. (2) Networked communication system. (3) An information repository. (4) Policies and protocols for sharing information. (5) Feedback and managing changes. (6) Performance measurement.
