System or Lifeworld? Rethinking the role of mass media in Habermas ’s theory of communicative action

報紙、電視、廣播、雜誌這樣的大眾傳播媒體，是應該以「系統」還是「生活世界」來加以檢視呢？藉著探討哈伯瑪斯在其第二冊的《溝通行動理論》中所提出的「系統－生活世界」雙元社會模型，本文認為現代社會中的傳播媒體，既有系統的運作邏輯，又實際擔負了生活世界的象徵再生產功\能，綜合言之，可說是一種「制度化的象徵再生產」次系統。然而，這種經過媒體技術中介所構成的生活世界，似已不再是溝通行動及溝通理性的理想運作情境。

The essay reviews Habermas ’s social model, "system-lifeworld", proposed in his Theory of Communicative Action vol. 2, and tries to relate the concept of “ system” and “lifeworld” to the mass media such as newspaper, television, radio, and magazine. The author argues that contemporary mass media function both as the mechanism of system and as the symbolic reproduction of lifeworld. In brief, mass media can be seen as a sub-system of “institutionalized symbolic reproduction”. However, the author points out that the lifeworld mediated by mass media doesn’t fit the ideal situation of communicative action.
