Advances in Communication Research in the United States

This paper addresses the issue of recent research in communication in the US. It presents an overview of eight areas, including interpersonal, group, organizational, mass, rhetorical, political, intercultural, and international communication with some representative examples of current research studies that have recently been published. The paper also presents a summary of the author ’s views on six current trends in research in the US, such as examination of philosophical bases, exploration of comparative approaches, increased emphasis on motive and intent, attention to new contexts and sources of communication, increased movement in interdisciplinary directions, and examination of the impact of technology on communication. The paper concludes with three directions in which the author sees communication research going in the 21st century.
