In recent years, there is a trend towards diversity in most societies in the world. Changes in international political climate, the fast-advanced technologies, the ever-faster immigration patterns, and the interdependent economic styles all contribute to a more diverse cultural setting in which we live and work. More and more people are inevitably engaged in situations where diversity is crucial either by choice or by assignment. This essay is an attempt to examine the issue with a communication perspective by (a) examine the trend toward diversity in the world we live in today, (b) investigating the literature on identity, including the formation of identity and its relation to culture and communication, and (c) discussing the dialectic relation between these two entities from a communication point of view. Examples of the United States and both sides of the Taiwan straits are used to demonstrate the tension between diversity and identity.
