The Internet has created a global town square rather than merely an arena for elite media programs. On this town square, the line between interpersonal communication and mass communication is blurred. Participants enjoy the freedom from being brainwashed by state-sanctioned media programs. The new digital medium makes gate-keeping more difficult and underrepresented groups heard more frequently, so it is counter-hegemonic. The self-image projected and the reality constructed on the Internet demonstrate a new extension of our physical being and environment.
