In this study, the board moderators of fan-based boards in PTT Bulletin Board System are taken as the research subjects. This study not only complements the knowledge of the role of “board moderators” between general users and top managers that tends to be neglected in BBS-related studies, but also provides an understanding of this special position and its similarities and differences with the moderators of other types and the leaders of traditional fans club.
The research results found that the roles of being a “fan” and a “moderator” have mutual impacts on each other. Such moderators usually serve as the board managers because they are fans, and unlike other boards that the moderators only need to manage the board order, fan-based moderators also need to be committed to accumulating fan cultural capital. Possessing abundant fan cultural capital is not required to be a moderator; however, fan cultural capital can be converted to the symbolic capital to strengthen the position of moderators and maintain the smooth operation of the boards. Unlike entity organization leaders, many fan-based moderators are usually not good at leading and communicating. The characteristics of network provide an opportunity for introvert people to show their passion.
