Oversea grants have been participating, if not controlling, the production and distribution of China’s independent documentary films. Among those co-produced documentary films that are based on pitching practices, the portrayal on the migrant people in China emerges as a salient subject matter. In terms of the formal and structural characteristics, the migrant depictions emphasize melodramatic conflicts of the family motif and the grow-up narrative. Through characterizing individuals and particular families, the sampled co-produced documentary films embody China’s transitional society
