In this study, German media theory that emphasizes the ideological trends of materialism after Friedrich Kittler is the foundation for thinking/reconstructing contemporary media research. To concretely develop the debate processes, this study started from media’s “time tense” questions and integrated the thinking of “variantology” to reveal how media evolution interacted with human perception as well as the possibilities and methods for specific feelings to appear.
The argumentation architecture of this study could be divided into five parts. First is to propose new initiatives for media researches focusing on media’s “time tense” integrated with thinking of “variantology” so as to investigate potential interactions between media evolution and human perception; Second is to provide the outlines for traditional media research pattern. Based on these outlines, relationships between media and humans could be depicted to shape the genealogy of media research. Then, introduction of Kittler’s thinking and argument allows this study to outline that the new pattern of media research was altered from traditional technology philosophy to the practical philosophy of technology; Third, starting from practical philosophy of technology, questions about what is media’s “time tense” could be investigated; Fourth is to consider the argumentation basis and range to define that it is built on what kind of epistemological basis to cause turning with qualitative change as well as how it serve as one of the practical methods for contemporary creations; Finally, to summarize the intentions of this study, elaboration on the thinking of variantology actually reveal the fact that the nature of media stay in an unstable condition. This means that brand-new theories and ways of thinking are essential for us to reconstruct “new materialism” via the thinking of media archaeology, which may be one of the potential thinking start points.
