During Taiwan ’s era of Authoritarianism the 1979 Kaohsiung Formosa Incident became a turning point in opposing Taiwan ’s one-party state and the development of Taiwan ’s democracy. This research uses an historical approach to examine the role of Wu San-Lian & his Independent Evening News as growing pressure within the government to suppress democratic dissent from Formosa magazine yielded to a break-in at the Kaohsiung offices of Formosa magazine along with arrest of the magazines executives, and follows Lian & Independent Evening News ’ role as protests in Kaohsiung and around the nation occurred opposing the break in & arrests and the KMT ’s attempts to prosecute the magazine for insurgency.
