Both image and text are key components for any media type, especially for news. Almost the spatial configuration between image and text was concerned with left-right orientation from editor ’s intuition and experience. This study manipulated the reading direction and layout between image and text in the same news to investigate the changes of the oculomotor characteristics, such as average fixation time and total fixation numbers. Results showed that there were no difference between left text and right text under rightward reading condition. But there were more fixation counts significantly on left image than on right image, and more average fixation time on right image than left image under rightward reading condition. Those asymmetrical phenomena disappeared under leftward reading condition. This implied that left image may attract more sights in ordinary reading.
