Coherence has been a research concept popular in linguistics but rarely studied in journalism. It is, therefore, the purpose of this paper to examine its applicability in news, particularly whether and how the newspaper headlines "relate to" (or cohere to) the news text as commonly assumed in many editing textbooks. This paper adopted two ideas, coherence and cohesion respectively, and purposely selected three news articles to compare the degree of similarity between the headlines and news texts. By complementing the case study method used in this study, a number of in-depth interviews with editors were also conducted. The result of this study shows that several research variables may be suitable to the concept of coherence in news research, such as "proposition," "logics," "correspondence," "relationship," "accuracy," “lexicity," "structure."
