Donald W. Keyser, the former principal deputy assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the State Department of U.S, was arrested and accused by U.S. government in September, 2004 for the charge of secretly visiting Taiwan without official approve by the State Department. The case became a prominent news event covered by all the major Taiwanese newspapers. This study analyzed the news frames selected by Taiwanese newspapers in covering the Keyser case. Research findings indicated that although the newspaper attempted to utilize five different frames for interpreting the case, yet, owing to the difficulties for acquiring relevant facts about the case, newspapers published a lot of stories about the Keyser ’s case on the basis of reporters ’ personal guess or uncertain information provided by anonymous sources.
